Any substance that you take in and provides your body with the necessary nutrients thus improving your healthy life is known as food. Food can take two main forms: solid ( grains, vegetables, meat and fish, fruits, etc), and liquid ( fruit juice, water, tea, milk, sauces, honey, etc).

Nutrients generally are what make foods important. These are those compounds (substance) found in food that when munched promote health. Six major types of nutrients are usually found in most of the food we take in.

  • Carbohydrates.

These are macro nutrients that serve as an immediate source of energy
for most activities we perform ( like running, walking, playing,
reading etc) and the chemical processes that take place in the cells of
our bodies to sustain life.

Carbs food include rice, cereals, bread, potatoes, sugar, milk,
yams, coco yams, corn, bread, ice cream, yogurt, some fruits, fibers, etc

Carbohydrates in the form of fibers aid in regulating the bowel
movement thus lowering constipation. Consuming fibers also makes you
feel full and this increases weight loss and regulates your blood
cholesterol level.

  • Proteins:

Most protein foods include eggs, meat, fish and seafood, diary, legumes, poultry, soy products, etc.

Consuming protein foods provide us with energy that is used during extreme starvation, produce antibodies that help our immune system fight disease-causing agents, function as biological catalysts called enzymes that help speed up reactions in our body thereby improving our health. The consumption of protein is so fascinating that neglecting it, might cause malfunction of our hemoglobin ( red pigment in our blood) since it is made of proteins.

These micro nutrients are organic substances ( compounds) that are required in small amount and are very essential to our body.

Main sources of vitamins include pork, whole grains, enriched bread,
cereals, meat, poultry, fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products,
leafy green vegetables and legumes, seeds, fruit juice, etc.

Consuming food rich in vitamins aids in cell function, growth, and development.

Vitamins sometimes act as enzymes, speeding biochemical reactions in
your body cells. Some vitamins (Vitamins C and E ) function as antioxidants that neutralize free radicals ( unstable molecules) in our body which if allowed to accumulate will destroy our body cells. Free radicals
(bad guys) usually get into our body either externally by some
environmental factors (air pollution like smoke from cars) or internally
by the formation of harmful by-products of some biochemical reactions
taking place in our cells. So consuming food rich in vitamins that
supply antioxidants saves you and me a great deal.

 

  • Fats and lipids.

These macro nutrients are thought to be the maximum producer of energy ( calories) in our body compared to proteins and carbs.

Foods rich in fat nutrients include oil, butter, nuts, seeds, pears, olive, margarine, pork, seafood, etc.

Energy from fats are mainly used as the body storage form of energy and this energy is only used up when that of carbohydrate are exhausted. Fat are also thought to insulate and heat our body during cold or winter season. Munching fat-rich foods supplies us with fats that nourishes the health of skin and hair.

  • Minerals.

These micro nutrients are solid substances that when consumed as food, help the body to develop and grow healthily.

Mineral-rich foods comprise table salt, soybeans, breads, vegetables, processed foods, milk products, canned fish with bones, green legumes, fish, poultry, nuts and seeds, chocolate, eggs, hard water etc.

Ingesting mineral-rich foods keep bones, muscles, and brain in proper condition, and also supply the body with antioxidants ( e;g selenium, zinc, and copper). Minerals also function as enzymes in our body.

  • Water.

This is a colorless, odorless, tasteless liquid that is highly necessary and beneficial for plants’ and animals’ health.

Foods highly rich in water include mushroom, tomatoes, cucumber, spinach, berries, cabbage, coconut water, melon, oranges, broccoli, grapefruit, Brussels sprouts, plain yogurt etc.

  •  Our body generally consists of 60% water and 90% of water makes up our blood. Thus abstaining yourself from water will lead to diverse health issues since this nutrient practically makes a very high amount of your blood. As a result, oxygen may not be fully distributed to all parts of the body.
  • Drinking water also brings about fullness and may lead to weight loss.
  •  Consuming water forms part of your saliva and mucus that help mix food completely during chewing.
